Is Your Hair What You Eat

Hair Do's & Reviews

Is Your Hair What You Eat??
June 2nd 2016

How much of your hair is Genetics VS. Diet

X-linked recessive inheritanceAs soon as puberty hits your hair starts to reduce its thickness which is just around the time you seem to lose all your baby fat. Ironic??? There are major factors to the amount of hair you have, how it shines and it’s strength. But it is not all on inherited genes

Genes

Yes! Your Genes determine the majority of your hairs’ structure at birth, Genetics determines if you will go bald, it also determines how long your hair will grow (not actual length but the amount of time your hair is in the growing phase of the life cycle.) The longer your active growing phase the longer your hair will be lengthwise while looking healthy. The color of your hair is the outcome of your parents genes combining; like in preschool when you mixed blue and red to make purple. Same the thickness and texture of your hair. But that saying we are what we eat really has a lot of truth to it.

What are you feeding your hair

Just as with many things if you put the cheap stuff in it, it later becomes expensive.

Protein

Your hair is composed of mostly protein; which means that it requires a steady supply of it to continue to grow. People average about 120,000-150,000 strands of hair and only shed 50-100 strands a day
Iron
Iron helps your blood cells carry oxygen, if your body is not intaking enough iron to replace what it uses daily you can become anemic; which can cause your body to become weak, and tired and can cause hair loss. No one wants those symptoms.
B Vitamins: (Foliate, B6, B12)
This vitamin is essential for cell turnover. If you lack this, your cells will starve causing premature shedding, slow growth and weakness. Deficiencies can be a big cause from hair being prone to breakage.
Biotin
Our bodies produce its own biotin. Deficiency is not common because of this but may people who become seriously ill will experience a reduction in biotin production which will cause hair loss
Vitamin C
Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron that is found in vegetables. It also is needed for the production of collagen, the fibers of our body that hold tissue tight (which is why you will find many collagen skin creams) With hair not enough of vitamin C will cause hair to become brittle from the body not having enough collagen produced at the time your hair is growing.
Vitamin A (Beta Carotene)
Vitamin A is also necessary for cell growth. If your body lacks in this you will probably find you have varying problems with dandruff. But taking in too much can cause hair loss in the form of excessive shedding. You will find many foods to supply you with beta carotene but if you use multivitamins looks for one that has half from retinol and half from mixed carotenoids for better absorption.
Zinc
Zinc aids the body in tissue repair and helps to keep oil glands working properly. Working oil glands in your follicles means healthier shinier hair.

Your Hair is a Marker for Your Overall Health

If your hair is lacking in luster and shine don't just reach for a great shampoo and conditioner though using good products is a good idea but my idea of good products differs then other peoples, Your whole body is made up of protein, vitamins, and minerals. When your body uses its supplies you need to replenish them not just by putting them on you but by getting them inside you. Where they work as the building blocks for new growth. Woman know how amazing their hair, skin and nails looked while they are taking prenatal vitamins. It is not just pregnancy glow. Your hair needs Vitamin B, Biotin, Vitamin C, Protein, Iron, Zinc, and Vitamin A because it is what helps us regenerate the cells.
You will notice that if you eat a lot of bad foods your body will feel sluggish and your hair will get dull so brighten up your diet and your hair will shine. The more basic you eat the more naturally your body will do what it needs to do to keep you healthy from your toes to the tips of your hairs.

Picking your Stylist is Not so Easy

Picking your Stylist is Not So Easy

The time has come and you need a stylist

I wish I could honestly say that all stylists and salons are the same but that would be a lie. Just as a stylist takes time  to find a salon to work for, you should put just as much time into choosing a stylist to help enhance your natural beauty. There are many things that will disqualify a stylist from being right for a person. Personality is a big one. Work experience can also be a big factor for some people but I do not personally feel that someone newer to the field doesn't know what they are doing .

I have been a hairdresser and skin care professional for 12 years. I personally love styling and cutting hair. It is the best way for me to express my creativity. I range from funky to classic styles. I love a challenge and I love a happy client that can't stop looking in the mirror when I am done; which is the ultimate compliment. I am honest with my clients. I will do what they ask but I will voice my concerns if I feel they are requesting something that will not work. This is not the case for many stylists. So be picky about who you let touch your hair - it is for your own benefit.

Be Selective
Just because you go into an upscale salon does not mean that the stylist is top notch. Hair schools range in what they teach their students based on trends in color techniques and cuts. If the year you enter school is all about funky asymmetrical styles then that is what some schools teach.
  • Before you book, take a look: I know we do not have an endless amount of spare time. Sometime you just want to get a nice haircut quickly, but that does not always go hand in hand. Find salons in the area. Walk into the salon and watch how it operates. Watch how the stylists interacts with their clients in their chairs and the ones waiting to be seen. Evaluate their front desk service by browsing their product line and make sure they have products you like to use. You can even ask the receptionist for a tour of the salon if they offer multi-services like massage or skincare.
    •  If you walk into a salon and no one acknowledges you that is a BIG BIG BIG queue that this place will  not give you the service you deserve.

  • Talk to the Stylists: If there are stylists not busy with clients, give them a mini interview after you have seen them interact with other clients. Ask them
      • How long have you been doing hair?
      • What is your specialty?
      • What do you like about this salon?
      • Have you worked with my hair type before?                                                                    (This is a big pet peeve of mine, not all stylists know how to work with all hair textures.)
      • Are you good at the type of cut I'm requesting? ( I am great at short, tapered haircuts on women but I will honestly say the finesse it takes to do a men’s fade is not my)

  • If after your conversation you are not comfortable move on to the next salon on your list and repeat the process
    • Do not do anything that leaves you out of your comfort zone. You should be comfortable in the salon and with the people who work there no if ands or buts about it

What a Face Shape

What A Face Shape!!

Know your face shape and find your style...
by Sarah Renee June 4, 2016
The face of a human holds more than just the windows to the soul. You can find out a lot about your style just from your face shape. From what hairstyles will work for you to the earrings that will look amazing.
How they decided on what the ideal face shape is remains a mystery to me, I think you should rock what you have, not try to make your face look like someone else's idea of perfection. The beauty industry  has been giving women tips on how to make their face appear that perfect oval shape for years. I do agree however that there are certain things that do not look great on certain face shapes. Your personal style should be based on what you like and you feeling comfortable in your skin.

    It Just Does Not Work
Rock whatever style you feel amazing in. That being said certain face shapes tend to suffer self consciousness over similar problem areas. If you love having a larger nose you flaunt it if you hate your larger nose you do things to minimize the look of it. The same goes with many features. My face is Diamond or Heart shaped depending on who you ask. Both shapes are recognizable by the cheek bones extending out and resting higher up on the face making your chin seem to almost come to a point, Heart shapes tend to be the people that have widows peaks but overall they are about the same shape. I personally love my hair on the medium to long side. But I have always wanted to try that short cut Halle Berry had in 007 Die Another Day. I have never wanted to find out the hard way if I would hate it on me so my hair has stayed long. My widows peaks has me going back and forth from no bangs to side bangs to full bangs at my will and with no care because they work well with my face. Here are a few tips to style yourself by your face shape you may just find that it makes sense for you.

The Twist Behind Those Braids

The Twist Behind Those Braids

Are You Causing Damage

Ponytails and braids can cause hair to break, especially if your style is pulled tightly. If you wear your hair that way every day, permanent hair damage can occur. Braiding or putting your hair in a ponytail when it's wet can cause damage. If you apply your braids with excessively wet hair breakage can occur also because wet hair stretches but once it drys out it shrinks. If you style is too tight when the shrinkage occurs the strands will snap. Be mindful of the type of elastics you are using as well for this can increase the problem.
Extensions and weaves are a lot like ponytails and braids. Over time, they can leave hair broken and brittle. The difference is the damage is at the roots where it is harder to cut out.If you have a discomfort or ache in the scalp, that indicates that  it is causing too much pressure at the roots. Worse, traction alopecia is a serious hair loss condition caused by wearing tight hairstyles like extensions for too long a time period. So either keep it loose, or try growing your hair instead of going for instant length.
Please note that the damage from ponytails, braids, extensions, and weaves is a result from improper installation,  maintenance and excessive use. Everything you do to your hair can cause damage but there are many ways to avoid damage or at least minimize it.

Braided Benefits
Braids are very easy to style most of the time you can just get up and go which who does not see the benefit in that. Braids can last 2-8 weeks depending on your hair type, and the style of the braids.  While your hair is in braids your hair gets a rest from the daily styling of your hair like combing brushing and for some the drying of daily washing.

Box Braids: Natural Hair

Start Off Right
Whether you are doing your hair yourself or going to a stylist keep these next tips in mind
The amount of tension needed for braiding is only enough to keep hair smooth  if you have a headache after your braids are done they are way too tight for your head, if you have little bumps or inflamed areas or areas of intense soreness, or if you feel like you just had a face lift. The braids are too tight remove them or risk a massive amount of breakage.
If you braiding with extensions make sure that you do not go too heavy with the extension hair. Putting too much weight on the hair shaft will cause it to snap or pull out of the follicle . Base your hair extensions choices not just on the wanted style but also in what your hair texture can handle.
If you find that your braids or extensions are bothersome in any of the above mentioned ways  do not wait have them removed, give your head and hair a few weeks to recover and then try again keeping  your hair's integrity in mind. If all your hair snaps off that is never a good look and you will find yourself back in the hair store but this time looking for a full wig.

Why Do We Straighten???

Why Do We Straighten?!?

The endless fight of frizz, untamed curl, and the burns.
foods that make your hair grow
by Sarah Renee  June 1st 2016
I am sure you, like everyone else has seen the endless parade of Keratin and other straightening treatments that are forever being promoted and sold. There is a large amount of confusion that goes along with any permanent hair process whether it is a simple all over color (which is never that simple) or the big texture changing chemical processes. So let me shed some light on the world of straightening curl and de- humidifying that mane.
If you would like simple chemical free straightening you go with hair wrapping to stretch out the hair shaft. No this is not permanent and yes it does not always give you the best results; it really takes a skill to master doing it on your own head. Next chemical free option though it is not damage free is hot ironing or hot rollers sets. These methods do not reduce frizz (there are products that work for that), they will not keep your hair straight if it gets wet, and you have to do the process over every time you want that look. Not a big deal, much healthier for your hair but not everyone has time to flatten, re-curl, and wrap their hairs everyday. So they invented the chemical method.
There are many different types to start off with: Keratins the new rage, Japanese thermal straighteners, reverse perms and relaxers. The names of the chemicals in these products are endless and some unpronounceable, along with the list of companies that sell them but let's get down to the skinny of it. All of these things are chemical services. THEY CHANGE THE WAY THE HAIRS' INTERNALBONDS ARE CONNECTED BY BREAKING THEM DOWN! (this does not mean every product will break your hair off your head). The truth of the matter is you can not do any type of chemical hair service without damaging the integrity of your hair. It just isn't possible. However it is possible to safely change your hair and there are a few rules to ensure this happens.
  1. Go to a Licensed Professional (but  not just Licensed someone who really knows what they are doing, find someone that yes want to perform the service but want to do it accurately and safely on your hair)
  2. Get more than one opinion ( just like at the doctors get a second 3rd and 4th opinion and choose the stylist that makes you feel most comfortable about placing your hair in their hands
  3. Read up on the products being used. Yes do your own research ( however if you are going to ask for a chemical service understand this is a real chemical service your hair will feel, look and act differently after this is done and these services once done can not be undone. You are agreeing to the service, you are also agreeing to the risk of not liking what you thought you would like)
  4. Do Not Lie to the Stylist doing your hair!!!!! ( there is a reason that a good stylist asks you a million questions don't brush them off as unimportant. Here is why everyone's hairs are different your hair can only take what your hair can take. If you have done 7 color changes in a year already tried 3 over the counter permanent straighteners and flat iron your hair every day you do not want 450 degrees of heat put on top of a chemical on your hair shaft. Yes your hair would likely snap off. If you would like the best results be upfront about what you do with your hair.we can guess and i personally always assume someone is lying or leaving out something and plan accordingly. If a stylist tells you no you should understand that they do not think that your hair shaft can withhold the treatment and do not just go to the next salon and try someone else.
  5. Do not go past your comfort level. Stylist are sales people and yes they have a quota or weekly income they are trying to make, but do not let them just add you to their numbers and leave you unhappy and not comfortable with how you look. You have to wear your hair we just try and make it look good according to your standards not our own.
